i know some guys are willing to pony up the bucks for a curado bsf. i'm not one of them. i'm betting there are those out there who feel the same. i bought a pflueger solara baitcaster today at bimart for $60. for the money, i'm willing to give it a shot. as i spend time with this reel, i'll report on how it performs.
alright, so i know it's really a shakespeare product. i can get over that. it's a pretty hot knockoff of the bsf, right down to the wiffle spool. it has the same spin too! there's a lot of plastic inside, but i'm guessing the bsf has about as much.
i got the last one at the tigard bimart but you might be able to find them elsewhere. you can get them online, but the prices start at $70 and go up from there.

i promised a report on this reel so here it is. first time out with the reel loaded with 10lb maxima ultragreen.
this reel spent a good ten minutes making me look like a rank amateur at baitcasting. i was running maybe 1/4oz of lead on a drift rig trying to do that really soft lob cast. it backlashed everytime on me. so, sucking up my pride i opened the reel and reengaged the fifth and six brakes (which i had disengaged when i first got the reel figuring i was good enough at casting and it would give me extra distance) and started casting again. still overspooled on me. i tightened the spool adjustment a touch, started casting with a little more oomph and it all started going well. it's smooth and lightweight and, despite the graphite frame, didn't twist or wobble the way some non-metal frames will do when i had to bear down on it.
it also appears to be a lucky reel, at least for me. i put the third fish on my tag yesterday with it, which makes this my best year of fishing yet (pretty sad, huh?). 6lb hatchery winter that spilled eggs all over the place after i got her bled out but she was frisky enough to test the drag a little, which was silky smooth.
i'd still recommend this reel to anyone on a budget. if you want to step up a notch, pfleuger also makes the trion, which has an aluminum frame and probably more metal overall in the reel construction.

i was in fisherman's today and they have the pflueger trion on sale for $99. it's the next step up from the solara with an all metal body and reel seat. better performance than the standard curado if you can stand the odd shape of the reel.

Hey Doug,
I just clicked on that link you posted for the Solara and it says in the specs below it that it holds 10yards of 12#, I know that's not right, but can you tell me what is right?
Are you still happy with it?
Anybody else have one?
