HELP!!! I have an old centre pin reel that belonged to my dad. I would like to catch a steelhead with it. How far is a reasonable cast with one of these things? I have it on a 10 1/2 foot rod. What is the best way to learn to cast one of these things? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Nodakr, I've been a lot of places and have never ever seen anyone using a centre pin. Maybe I'm not paying enough attention, but I'll be on the lookout. Thanks....Salmurai

Nobody around here fishes centre pin reels. I have seen one in my lifetime in the states. B.C is another story.
I know what you got. A fly reel on steroids. Bike tire spinning, palm it with your pinky finger to cast float fishing machine.
Like a baitcaster, this is a learned thing. I tried one up in B.C. for an hour or so and could hardly gat it to function. The 10 year old who it belongs to grabs it from me and tosses the rig 3/4 the way across the river.
Put in your time. In 10 or 15 years you will see them down here. For float fishing they are the real deal. Get the jump on the crowd.

Hello Flatfish, Thanks for the input. So how wide was the river. I can figure out 3/4 of whatever. I just need to know what a reasonable cast would be. I've even thought of anchoring up above a hole and just let it drift on down, but that wouldn't be the same. All I want to do is catch one steelhead on this old reel and then put it away with the rest of them. I've already connected with the old Magic spinning reel and the UCO steelhead fly reel.(some of you old timers might remember these) I remember my dad telling me about this centre pin and that it was a real SOB to cast! He wasn't lying.

Sal-
You can cast( with the correct rod, which will be between 10-12 feet. Some folks in B.C are using 15 footers) 3/4 across any river on the coast. If you can't hit the pocket, it probably aint the machine in your hands. Put in your time. Learn it well.
They are the perfect tool for float fishing. If you plan on putting it away after 1 fish, I may buy it. If it is for sale, that is.

FF, thanks for the info. FYI, reel not for sale. Family heirloom type of thing. It is a "Goite Casting Reel". New, never been used, still in the original box with instructions. Sold new for $7.95!!
