I decided to spend some money earlier this year and I bought a Minn Kota Riptide 24v 74 lb thrust motor. I also bought 2 Optima Batteries and all the goodies to go with it it like a Minn Kota on board charger....
Ive had the chance to use this sytem twice, Once on the Wilson and once on the Siltez. Both Times fish were put in the boat while side drifting. This is the only way to side drift out of a boat. I can fish and control the boat at the same time.
The 74lb thrust motor is a power house. In my 16x54 Willie with just 2 guys it has all the power I need for holding in t fast water and running back up river if I use the softer current seems.. Both times I used it I fish all day and barely noticed in power loss due to draining the batteries.
Manuvering the boat with the motor is easy. I can use it in all but the shallowest riffles. It doesnt work real well in rough water with lots of rollers. But for everything else it works great. While on the Wilson I never touched the oars from Mills to Sollie.
Once I get the boat control down while side drifting, Watch out! the steelhead are going to be in serious trouble.
