Dear NSIA Members, (feel free to pass this on) I just received a call and a fax today from Senator Gordon Smith's office (R-OR) to let us know that the omnibus bill passed out of the Senate today, headed for the President's signature. Senator Smith, together with help from other NW Senators, most notably Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), fought hard to restore the level of Mitchell Act funding to protect hatchery funding, screening of irrigation diversions, fish passage, mass marking, and monitoring. They pulled off a truly Herculean task, and it is likely that no federal Mitchell Act hatcheries will close this year. This would not be a reality without the hard work of NSIA. You all really rallied and worked with your staff here to stay on the issue. Some of you even went to DC with me on this funding issue. I would be very proud if each and every one of you would now show the Senators what a classy bunch of people the sportfishing industry is. Please call or write at least your own Senators, if not the 6 from OR, WA and ID and tell them thank you for protecting your jobs. They all helped, and a thank you for protecting the Mitchell Act program is in order. www.senate.gov/ ALSO from me to you: THANK YOU. Great work, we can do so much together. Best Regards, Liz Hamilton, Executive Director Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association PO Box 4 Oregon City, OR 97045 NSIALIZ@AOL.COM 503 631 8859 503 631 3887 fax
